We’re now officially underway, and slightly ahead of schedule!

We started the morning in Portland, ME, along the Eastern Promenade, as planned. (Thanks to Michael’s uncle Duane for the ride to the start! And for his and Aunt Laura’s hospitality during our stay; The stir-fry was delicious!)

Our route out of Portland (where we did a mini tour of the city) took us across southern Maine to the New Hampshire border at Rochester, which was near the intended finish. Unfortunately, the KOA we planned to stay at didn’t have space, so we rode another 11 or so miles to another campground. With both on insufficient sleep and low fuel, Michael slogged through the extra miles, while Nate powered through. In any case, both made it to Saddleback campground; Thank you to Carl for accommodating two soggy cyclists!

So, tonight is our first camping night; We set-up our tents in the drizzling rain, and took some time to dry and reorganize gear–while making our tent spaces liveable–before getting hot showers and food. It turns out a local pizza company was willing to deliver to the campground, helping us replenish calories.

Want to see something super cool?!? Watch a visualization of the first part of today’s ride here. (We’ll post a Relive video for each day’s ride!)

Tomorrow it is forecast to rain all day, so we’re planning a shorter ride. We’ll make-up miles Saturday in nicer weather.
